- Mechanical Watches: These timepieces are powered by a mainspring that is wound either manually (hand-wound) or automatically by the motion of the wearer’s wrist. They use a complex system of gears and springs to regulate time and are valued for their intricate craftsmanship and traditional engineering rather than sheer accuracy.
- Quartz Watches: The vast majority of modern watches use a quartz movement. A battery sends an electric current through a small quartz crystal, causing it to vibrate at a precise, stable frequency (usually 32,768 Hz). This makes them significantly more accurate and affordable than mechanical watches. They can have either analog hands or a digital display.
